Georgia Cancer Center Hires New Director
Augusta University has named Dr. Jorge Cortes the new director of the Georgia Cancer center at Augusta University, according to a report from The Augusta Chronicle.
Cortes is an internationally recognized leukemia researcher and drug developer and has treated chronic myeloid leukemia.
“There is good faculty there that is doing very good research,” Cortes told The Augusta Chronicle. “I think the opportunity to be a part of that team and help in any way that I can to put it all together and make it an outstanding cancer center, that sounds very exciting. I think it is a wonderful opportunity with a well-set foundation that I hope I can contribute to.”
Cortes’ selection was announced at the end of February. The search for a new director began in May 2017.
Cortes has served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the National CML Society since 2010, and a member of the Board of Directors of the International CML Foundation since 2009. Last year, Cortes received the John Goldman Prize from the foundation for his lifetime contributions to treating patients with CML.
Both Cortes and the cancer center as a whole have a goal to gain designation from the National Cancer Institute.
“I really enjoy mentoring and I think I can contribute because I have had the opportunity to have great mentors myself and being able to develop some programs here,” Cortes said.
