Five Local Shops and Restaurants to Visit on Small Business Saturday

November 22, 2017|

Countless Americans spend the days after Thanksgiving flooding huge chain stores in search of the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. In the midst of the subsequent chaos, people overlook an array of great deals being offered by the local businesses just around the corner.

In Augusta, small businesses around town are using a city-wide shopping contest to make the advantages of shopping local on Thanksgiving weekend more visible.

“We’re encouraging people to shop and dine small,” said Kathryn Freemon, a communications coordinator at the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber has effectively organized the competition by dubbing Nov. 25 Small Business Saturday. The 11 small businesses in the area that are partnering with the chamber will participate in a passport shopping contest with a grand prize. Shoppers will be able add a sticker to their passports for each of the participating businesses that they support, and people who fill their passports will be entered to win a two-day vacation in Jacksonville, Fl. More information can be found on the chamber’s website.

Many local businesses will offer great deals this weekend (some have been celebrating small business Saturday all week), but here are five participating in the passport contest that have some particularly tasty deals.

The home of the best sandwich in Augusta (according to Augusta Magazine) just got a little better. Hildebrandt’s recently added to their menu the “Sweet Heat Louis,” a collaboration with DiChicko’s (the cafe’s “sweat heat” sauce has become a big hit) and a variation on one of the institutional favorites, The King Louis.

If visitors spend $12 (pre-tax) at Hildebrandt’s this week, they’ll get the chance to draw a free prize in addition to being able to check one local institution off their passport’s list of destinations.

Hildebrandt’s is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday but will be closed Thanksgiving Day. They’re located at 226 Sixth St.

Treehouse Macarons

Small business Saturday came at the perfect time for Augusta’s new macaron shop, which just opened at the beginning of November in Furys Ferry Station. Despite opening their first storefront, the owners, Shane and Missy Smith, have not been slow in cranking out a wide variety of special holiday flavors. Gingerbread, hot cocoa, bourbon balls, and coal for the naughty ones will all be out on the shelves in waves over the coming weeks.

On Saturday, Treehouse Macarons will throw in an extra half-dozen macarons for every dozen purchased, and customers will be able to choose from the available holiday flavors in addition to the popular traditional ones like Creme Brulee and Sea Salt Caramel.

The store is located at 229 Furys Ferry Road, Suite 1. They’re open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Don’t forget your passport.

Ladybug’s Flowers & Gifts

The fresh flowers that Ladybug’s brings in daily–hydrangeas, lilies, roses and snapdragons, to name a few–will be a nice bargain this weekend. What’s left of the boutique’s fall merchandise will be discounted 60 percent, and Ladybug’s will be discounting all purchases 15 percent.

In addition to the Passport Shopping Contest, those who drop in will also have the chance to get in on a contest that the boutique is putting on. Win a name drawing, and you’ll win a vase of flowers once a month for an entire year.

Ladybug’s is located at 341 Furys Ferry Rd, #6. They’re open from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Buona Caffe

The Central Avenue coffee shop won Best of Augusta this year, and they’re wrapping up 2017 with a deal on some of their merchandise. Visitors who come in on Saturday and purchase a Buona Caffe mug will take home a free single-serve bag of ground coffee.

Buona Caffe is located at 1858 Central Ave. They’re open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Swank Company

The women’s clothing boutique in Surrey Center will give $10 discounts for every $50 customers spend in the store on Saturday.

The owners, Hannah and Rafy Bassali, will also be offering the same deal at their other stores, Charm House ( 403 Furys Ferry Rd) and Posh Tots (345 Highland Ave, also in Surrey Center).

The Swank Company is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. They’ll be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Black Friday. The boutique is located at 403 Furys Ferry Rd.

Among other local businesses participating in the Small Business Saturday Passport Shopping Contest are Palm Village, Sweet Suite Bakeshop, Sandwich City, Sprint Foods and Paws and Claws Pet Bakery.
