Unique Boutique to Close, Pita Restarurant to Open

After 12 years, the landlord of an Evans plaza has given notice to “Whatever,” a trendy boutique known for its vibrant colors, beach-like gifts and unique jewelry. The owner was recently notified that the landlord got a tremendous offer from a restaurateur wanting to open a restaurant featuring pita sandwiches.

Whatever is located next to a chiropractor and Modish Salon in front of the entrance to Home Depot on Washington Road. “Lost our lease” sales will continue until the store closes next month.

Two KFC restaurants closed in Columbia County last week, and a third is closing.

“It was the toughest decision I ever made in my life,” said KFC franchisee Billy Wingate, “It really hurts.”

The fast-food restaurants at 215 Furys Ferry Road in Martinez and 4088 Jimmie Dyess Parkway off Interstate 20 closed Feb. 10, and Wingate is planning to shut down his final restaurant at 898 Horizon South Parkway in Grovetown within two weeks after the remaining food has been sold.

Wingate said the closings were caused by increased labor and food costs.

“It was just impossible to make any money,” he said.

About 75 employees at the three restaurants will lose their jobs, Wingate said.

“It’s hard to go in there and tell someone you have to close down the store,” said Wingate, who opened his first area Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1988 in Barnwell, S.C.. “It’s hard for me to talk about.”

There are parties interested in purchasing the properties, Wingate said

12 On Your Side: Appliance Land customers left hanging

COURTESY NEWS 12

News 12 at 6 o’clock / Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) — Longtime Augustans have shopped there for years, but now a CSRA business is closing its doors after 36 years.

Appliance Land suddenly went out of business, leaving many of its customers with unanswered questions.

“It kind of surprised me,” Brendan Aims said.

He says he knew the owner of Appliance Land had recently passed away but he had no clue the business would be closing.

“I think in today’s business environment, people make the business and maybe they couldn’t run it without Tommy,” he added.

Although the doors were locked, an employee of the company was loading up for deliveries when News 12 walked up with our camera. He told us a combination of financial and family problems led to appliance land closing shop                         .

Gigi Turner with the Better Business Bureau says Appliance Land canceled its membership with the BBB a few weeks before closing its doors.

“Right now, based on what we found out calling the business, is that the business has closed its doors and they do plan on closing the business,” she said.

Customers like Sharon Brown still have a hard time accepting the family-run business on Washington Road is closed for good.

“Oh, it breaks my heart seriously. I hate to see any business go out of business,” she said.

A store employee told us he would be making deliveries this week but he wasn’t sure if everyone who placed an order will get it.

If you ordered something from Appliance Land and have not received it:

  • Go ahead and notify your credit card company to dispute the charge.
  • You need to call Appliance Land if you paid debit, cash or check. The number is (706) 863-1111.
  • Call the BBB at (706) 210-7676.

BREAKING NEWS\RESTAURANT BUZZ – THE RETREAT AND SMOKERS RETREAT CLOSE IN EVANS

DISCLAIMER: These businesses were former marketing clients of “Buzz on Biz”.

After less than four months, the primary owner of both hospitality businesses suddenly shut its doors around Christmas.  The primary owner is a longtime SRS employee who had help from a longtime friend with hospitality experience. They developed the concept of a tapas bar and cigar lounge from living and visiting similar spots in Charleston.

The Smokers Retreat opened first, followed by the restaurant with several missteps. It first opened as a part coffee bar and pastry shop in the morning—and closed shortly thereafter. Lunch was never served. There were delays in getting a liquor license for the evening and the Health Department shut down the restaurant for several days due to a violation. The most promising part of the restaurant was the variety of tapas served. Unfortunately, the head chef left within a week of opening—and the menu changed several times while a new chef came on from Champions Retreat.

The owner had hoped to work out a deal for the executive chef and manager to sub-lease or purchase the business along with an investor. It never materialized.

Owned by Cliff and Wanda Garzzillo, Apizza di Napoli opened in the Centre South Shopping Center on Silver Bluff Road this year.

The restaurant holds a certification of True Authentic Neapolitan Pizza from the VPN Association in Naples, Italy, using the guidelines set out by the Verace Pizza Napoletana Association.

The dough is made fresh daily, and Apizza di Napoli uses San Marzano tomatoes, which according to its website, come from the base of Mount Vesuvius in Naples.

Swamp Fox

Swamp Fox opened on Chesterfield Street in the old Olive Oil’s building this year.

Located across the street from the Aiken County Courthouse, Swamp Fox bills itself as a fine Southern cuisine restaurant.

The restaurant’s name honors Revolutionary War militia leader Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for leading a band of fighters through the low- and back-country swamps against British troops.

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel Restaurant and Country Store opened its doors on Jan. 30 and has kept busy since then, as it was highly anticipated by residents who waited several years for the eatery to come to Aiken.

Located at 2634 Whiskey Road, the construction of the restaurant was given the official thumbs up by City Council on December 2010. Construction began in late August of 2011.

The business brought approximately 185 jobs to Aiken.

LaDolce

LaDolce, a downtown cafe, opened on Nov. 29 and is run by Executive Pastry Chef Kirstie MacVean and her mother, Tea Master Lady Kelly MacVean.

This new business offers gourmet desserts, including wedding cakes. It also offers a variety of coffee drinks and teas.

LaDolce is located at 123 Laurens St.

Betsy’s on the Corner

Betsy’s on the Corner opened for business over the summer. Owned and managed by Betsy Simons, this eatery offers a wide range of main dishes and desserts.

The business is located in the space once occupied by Maxine’s in downtown Aiken and has been completely transformed to resemble an old-fashioned soda parlor.

Betsy’s On the Corner is located at 159 Laurens St. N.W.

In Progress in 2012

The Fresh Market

Work has been under way for several months at the site of The Fresh Market in the South Park Shopping Center on Whiskey Road. There is no word yet on when the specialty grocery will open; the company’s website still only lists the store as “coming soon.”

The Fresh Market will be the anchor store in the shopping center at around 19,000 square feet. There are other retail spaces on either side ranging from 900 to 1,440 square feet.

Halvorsen Holdings, which operates the shopping center, has not listed any other tenants for the strip.

The shopping center’s concept plan shows renovations would add varying elevations to the building, painted in earthy hues. Thomas Vincent, president of Halvorsen Holdings, has said the hope is to give that area a more downtown look and feel.

Applications are being accepted online for deli, meat and produce managers.

For more information on becoming a new employee, visit HYPERLINK “http://careers.thefreshmarket.com” careers.thefreshmarket.com.

Sam’s Club

Sam’s Club, currently in the early phase of construction on the Westside of Aiken, should be opening in 2013 at the corner of Robert M. Bell Parkway and Highway 1.

One of the largest retail constructions in the area, the membership-only retail warehouse club owned and operated by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. hopes to have its doors open in around a year’s time, according to the company.

Plans for the store show an approximately 139,000-square-foot wholesale warehouse and a six-pump gas station. The site will be accessed from two entrances with dedicated turning lanes. These changes to the roadway are now visible to motorists on Highway 1.

Figures released by the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer estimated 150 to 175 new jobs will be created by the facility once it is in operation. These positions should start to be advertised by late summer or fall.

Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express

Recently approved by City Council in December, these two hotels will be constructed on a plot of land located on Whiskey Road adjacent to Stratford Drive. They will be owned and operated by Naman Hotels.

The Holiday Inn Express would be a four-story, 55,072-square-foot building that would include 95 rooms and parking spots. It will not include a restaurant or meeting place. Staybridge Suites will be 68,115 square feet with 90 rooms, 115 parking spaces and a 600-square-foot meeting room. There will be no restaurant in that hotel.

The hotels are projected to have an economic impact of approximately $30 million and will create around 100 jobs.

The Marriott Towneplace Suites

Construction continues on this hotel located off Whiskey Road on Monterey Road. The hotel was approved in July 2011 and the groundbreaking ceremony was held this June.

Hotel co-owner Neel Shah of NMR Sycamore said the four-story facility will include an outdoor pool, guest laundry, an exercise room, free breakfast and 85 large studio rooms.

Approximately 20 to 25 jobs will be created by this hotel.

Academy Sports

Academy Sports announced in August that it plans to open a store in Aiken. The sporting goods store will locate in Hitchcock Plaza off Silver Bluff Road where the Stein Mart was formerly located.

Academy offers athletic and casual clothes and footwear as well as a large selection of sporting equipment, according to its website. It’s projected that the store will be ready to open by the summer of 2013.

Visit HYPERLINK “http://www.academy.com” www.academy.com for more information on this retailer.

Closed in 2012

Blockbuster

Blockbuster closed its doors early this year after months of speculation that the location on Pine Log Road would shutter its doors.

Hundreds of Blockbuster stores throughout the nation stopped renting and selling movies and video games and closed their doors following the company’s filing for bankruptcy in September 2010. The company was auctioned off and sold to Dish Network for a reported $320 million, and, while many stores remained open, many also closed.

Theresa’s

The Mexican restaurant on Whiskey Road closed this year. Several calls to the property’s leasing company were not returned.

Ryan’s

Ryan’s on Whiskey Road closed in March as part of a bankruptcy restructuring plan.

The Aiken location was one of 83 under performing restaurants owned by parent company Buffets Inc. that have closed or will close to “strengthen the company’s portfolio and position the company for profitable growth” in the wake of a Chapter 11 filing, according to the company.

Ryan’s was originally located across Whiskey Road in what is now Millbrook Baptist Church’s youth center known as The Rock. Millbrook acquired the building in 2000 when Ryan’s relocated.

Fred’s

Fred’s closed its South Park Shopping Center location in July to make way for The Fresh Market.

South Park Shopping Center has emptied out by degrees over the past year. Aaron’s and the Goodwill Emporium relocated in 2011, and Acceptance Insurance relocated this year. There is no word on the future of Roma Pizza & Restaurant, which closed once construction work began at the site.

THE RETREAT AND SMOKERS RETREAT CLOSE

There is just a sign up on the door in the plaza that houses Shane’s Rib Shack and Georgia Bank And Trust. Former Buzz Sponsor “The Retreat Tapas Bar and The Smoker’s Retreat” are now closed. The financial backing came from an SRS professional, who partnered with a former hospitality professional to try and bring a popular Charleston business model to Augusta. They opened in late summer and had immediate missteps along the way—including a delay in getting a state liquor license and a brief shutdown for a health department violation. The owner had hoped to “sub-lease” the buildings to folks who were managing the businesses for him.

KFC CLOSES ANOTHER LOCATION

The franchisee of area KFC’s has had a rough go of it the last few years in the CSRA. A sign is now up signifying the 3rd closing of a KFC in the last few years. Their newest store on Washington Road just down from the Super WalMart in Evans is now closed. When they opened a few years ago they tried breakfast and their lunch and dinner buffet as well. The buzz is they were hoping for a traffic signal at the entrance to a neighboring subdivision and their restaurant and it was never worked out—making getting in and out difficult. The sign says visit their store on Belair Road or in Grovetown—two of five stores remaining for Pry-King—after the stores on Wrightsboro Road, Columbia Road(now a Zaxby’s) and the Evans location all closed. From a competition standpoint, KFC may have been hurt by the very busy Maryland Fried Chicken store that opened a few months back in the neighboring Walmart Plaza.

AMICI’S CAFÉ CLOSES

Amici’s Café on the Jimmy Dyess Parkway shutdown over the weekend as company representatives removed furniture to presumably use it for another restaurant in the chain. The buzz is some folks had holiday parties there or catering from Amici’s coming up. Chef Jeff Freehof called Buzz founder Neil Gordon for WGAC’s phone number to call in to offer his help.

A.K Gulati opened it several years ago as one of a small number of franchisees in the chain. He had hoped to leverage his hotel guests at the adjacent Howard Johnson and Hawthorne Suites. Ownership of all three did not prove to be beneficial. He failed to find a buyer for the restaurant and eventually Amici’s corporate took it over.

ASIAN RESTAURANT CLOSES 2ND LOCATION IN EVANS

TAO ASIAN SUDDENLY CLOSED IT’S RESTAURANT IN THE PUBLIX SHOPPING CENTER AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE RIVERWOOD SUBDIVISION. THEY WERE PART OF A GROWING TREND OF SERVING A VARIETY OF FUSION MEALS FROM DIFFERENT ASIAN CULTURES LIKE THAILAND, JAPAN, CHINA. IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO, OWNERS ALSO CLOSED A DIFFERENT TAO ASIAN RESTAURANT IN THE FOOD LION SHOPPING CENTER AT EVANS TO LOCKS AND FURY FERRYS ROAD.
