Local Tournaments Driving a Month Full of Sports in Augusta
Two local athletic events will kick off this week as Augusta approaches the halfway point of a month with a heavy dose of sporting events.
First, the Fourth Annual TaxSlayer Border Classic Soccer Invitational kicks off on Thursday at Blanchard Woods Park and will last through Saturday.
The event, which features 37 high school soccer teams from Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, is projected to pump $881,815 into the local economy, according to estimates from the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Augusta Sports Council.
The tournament will consist of 59 games during the three-day event.
The soccer tournament is one of a few major sporting events taking place in the Augusta area this month. Elevate Gymnastics and the Georgia Women’s Bowling Association hosted major events in Augusta earlier this month with Elevate the Stage at the James Brown Arena and the bowling association’s 2018 state tournament.
Also kicking off this week is the 3M Augusta Invitational women’s tournament, where 15 college teams, including Augusta University, will compete at Forest Hills Golf Club. The event is now in its 39th year, and professionals including Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Jordan Spieth, Justin Leonard and many more have competed in the tournament throughout its history.
The men’s tournament in the 3M Augusta Invitational will take place from March 29 to April 1. The men’s and women’s tournaments together are projected to have an economic impact of more than $129,000.
