Prestige and Discount Appliance Stores Close
The Prestige Appliance stores in Augusta and Aiken and Discount Appliance in Martinez have all suddenly closed.
The company’s owner Douglas Huffer, who expanded into the Augusta market last year with a 5,000 square-foot showroom in west Augusta, reportedly attempted to sell the assets to another company last week, unsuccessfully.
After opening Prestige last fall, Huffer opened Discount Appliance in Martinez in the spring.
A vendor of Huffer with knowledge of the situation says that Huffer filed for bankruptcy protection. According to Augusta Chronicle, Huffer has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in an attempt to liquidate and pay off creditors.
The high-end appliance store has yet to publicize what course of action customers who special ordered appliances from Prestige should take.
Prestige’s closing will cause the loss of around 35 jobs.
