Sunshine Bakery Under New Ownership
When former owner of Sunshine Bakery Steven Kaplan chose to sell his 70-year-old family business, multiple offers poured in from business developers wanting to do anything but continue the restaurant’s legacy.
Except for Gene Gurley.
The former server at Village Deli, Frog Hollow Tavern and Rae’s Coastal Cafe is ready to breathe new life into the historic downtown restaurant. The establishment that has earned the title of Augusta’s best soup for numerous years will now be owned and managed by the man who was named the city’s best server for five years before the category was retired. In addition to his 16 years of food service, Gurley is accustomed to family-run businesses–his family owned Gurley’s Supermarkets and learned from his father and grandfather how to work and how to treat others.
“This is definitely what I’m supposed to be doing,” he said.
Gurley will be sprucing up the restaurant and updating the atmosphere, but the menu including the famous soups that Augusta has always loved will remain the same.
