Sports Boost Local Economics

Mixed Doubles Player Reaching For BallSporting events continue to have a big economic impact on the CSRA. The Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Augusta Sports Council project that visitors to the area will spend more than $8.3 million during the month of August. Of that amount, more than $5.6 million will come from sports activities, while another $462,000 will come from the annual Augusta Outdoor Expo on Aug. 13.

The biggest event of the month will be the Military World Softball Championship, Aug. 11-14, which will have an estimated economic impact of more than $3.5 million. The Aiken Soccer Cup, Aug. 26-28, will bring in $1.3 million and the Georgia U.S. Tennis Association’s Mixed Doubles Championship, Aug. 11-14, will bring in $719,000.

The total estimated economic impact is calculated based on research commissioned by both the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Destination Marketing Association International in conjunction with globally recognized research vendors, the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics.
