Basketball, Other Sports Lead the Way for July Visitor Spending in Augusta

June 29, 2015|

Basketball will be the big draw in the CSRA in July, but don’t discount the economic power of family reunions.

According to the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Augusta Sports Council, visitors to Augusta are expected to spend $9.975 million during July.

The annual Nike Peach Jam held July 7-13 is expected to bring in $2.274 million, and the Nike Nationals girls basketball event July 25-31 will nearly match that, at $2.224 million. The Peach State Summer Showcase grassroots basketball tournament July 15-19 will bring in $1.118 million and the Blue Star Nationals basketball event July 26-30 will add $202,000, meaning basketball alone should bring more than $5.8 million to the area.

There are other sports events, too. The annual drag boat races July 15-19 has an estimated visitor spending of $821,000, the E-Z-Go Vaughn Taylor junior golf championship July 11-19 will add $169,000 and the Babe Ruth Southeast Regional baseball tournament July 15-19 will bring in nearly $531,000.

Family reunions will also have a significant impact. Some large ones, like the South Carolina Roots Family Reunion, will bring in $90,972 to the region, while the Brinson Family Reunion adds $75,810. There are 40 family reunions scheduled for the month of July, with the three biggest alone bringing in nearly a quarter of a million in visitor spending.

A couple of church conventions will combine to produce more than $1.5 million in visitor spending.

Direct visitor spending is calculated based on research commissioned by both the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Destination Marketing Association International in conjunction with globally recognized research vendors, the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics. Tourism Economics, a partner company of Oxford Economics, created the industry standard in event economic impact analysis using localized metrics that are updated annually.
